Course Description: During the self-paced online portion, you'll gain a deep understanding of the similarities and differences between advanced imaging studies (MRI, CT, ultrasound, enhanced x-rays), decision-making guidelines, and the American College of Radiology Appropriateness Criteria. You'll also review when imaging is not recommended to help avoid overuse. The in-person session takes learning from screen to clinic with interactive case studies, group discussions, and hands-on practice in completing referrals, building relationships with imaging centers, and management unexpected findings. This format allows you to engage with the material on your schedule, then apply it in a collaborative, practical setting that mirrors real-world clinical challenges.Course Objectives: 1. Differentiate between the role of plain film x-rays vs. advanced imaging (MRI, CT Scan, etc.) 2. Describe the responsibilities physical therapists have in functioning as first-contact providers 3. Implement evidence-based guidelines related to ordering of appropriate diagnostic imaging studies 4. Demonstrate appropriate use of the American College of Radiology Appropriateness Criteria and other published guidelines when referring for imaging 5. Describe current data related to physical therapists referring for imaging studies Course Outline: * Advanced Imaging Overview * When NOT to order/acknowledging the real potential for overuse* What to order and when * Group discussion/actual case-based decision-making scenarios * How do I put in a referral? * 'Owning' the results Speaker Bio: Dr. Keil serves as clinical professor at the University of Illinois at Chicago where he teaches diagnostic imaging in the doctor of physical therapy program.
